In Memory

Darcy Hayes (Grandel)

Passed away peacefully August 30, 2016 surrounded by her family, after battling cancer. Born May 26, 1954 to Lois and Jack Hayes in Dearborn Michigan, the family moved to Milwaukee in 1967. She graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 1972, and UW Madison in 1976 with her BA in Education. She always knew she wanted to work with special needs children and this passion brought her to New York where she earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from Columbia University. She began her career in the Milwaukee school system, then moved to St. Paul in 1979, and worked in the Minneapolis Public School system until retiring earlier this year. She deeply loved her students, finding the potential in each one, and her love was returned by her students, their parents and her peers. She married Bill Grandel on November 26, 1983 in Whitefish Bay and the couple made their home in the Highland Park area of St. Paul. Sons William John (born December 25, 1986) and Jonathon Christian (May, 27 1992) came into their lives. She was completely devoted to her family — her sons, husband, and parents, the family making frequent trips to Milwaukee and other vacation destinations with them, and later in life to care for them in ill health. Preceded in death by father, John T. Hayes, survived by mother Lois J. Hayes, sons Billy and Jonny, her loving husband Bill, and by many dear friends. Memorial gathering Saturday October 1st at Ideal Hall, 1494 North Dale Street.

What is the first thought that comes into my mind about Darcy...her smile! She was always smiling and it was contagious. I am praying over her family. I can only imagine how much she will be missed.

Darc and I had an awful lot of fun at Bay, playing intermural basketball and volleyball(poorly), learning to whistle with most of your fingers in your mouth in the stands during basketball games, working on yearbook(so we never had to sit in study hall). My visits to St. Paul won't be the same without lunch with Doris.

Rest in peace, friend.

What a terrible loss.  Darcy was always so full of life and always with a big smile on her face.  She radiated happiness.  My heart goes out to her friends and family.

I am so sad to have lost my friend for more than 45 years. Darcys Mom and I were able to spend time with her in the days before she died. We are all so very sad.

Darcy always had a smile on her face, was cheerful & warm to everyone.  So sorry that her life was way too short.

The losses seem so great as of late.

Darcy was a wonderful friend and companion who brought laughter, gentleness and a smile to every gathering.

Her compassion and gentleness towards her students and loved ones was extraordinary. I will miss her.

Rest in peace, dear friend, and blessings to your loved ones in the days ahead.

Darcy was such a kind person and I am sure she will be deeply missed. Her life was as I would have imagined-full of giving. Deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Darcy was such a good friend of mine (the first time I lived in WFB). During 7th and 8th grade, often we would go to her house after school and play Yatzee.  She had a great smile and laugh and she was the definition of a good friend.
